Artist Bio
Zaheer Chaudhry is a Pakistani
visual artist, photographer, and researcher based between Lahore, Pakistan, and
Dubai, UAE. For more than twenty-five years, his practice has grown from a
sustained curiosity about the environments that surround him, exploring
relationships between observation, memory, ecology, culture, and place.
His artistic journey began in the
streets and landscapes of Ajudhan, where everyday surroundings became an early
source of curiosity, learning and imagination. Old houses, bazaars, railway
tracks, fields, water bodies, changing seasons, shadows, textures and traces of
human presence shaped an enduring way of looking that continues to inform his
work. Walking, travelling and field observation remain integral to his
practice, allowing familiar environments to be repeatedly encountered and
understood through changing conditions of time, light, movement and memory.
Photography is Chaudhry's primary
medium and a methodology of artistic inquiry. Rather than treating the
photograph as an endpoint, he uses the image as a point of departure, allowing
photographic observations to shift into digital works, painting, immersive
experiences, mixed media, installation, public interventions and visual
archives. Changes of scale, material, context and spatial experience become
ways of extending the image and reconsidering how perception is formed.
His long-term photographic
practice has generated an evolving archive of more than 300,000 photographs,
developed through continuous travel, observation and engagement with diverse
environments and communities. The archive functions as a living body of visual
research, through which places can be revisited and reinterpreted as they
change—and as the artist's own perception changes.
In 2006, Chaudhry founded Carbon
Roadside Arts (CRSA), Pakistan's pioneering travelling art initiative,
extending art education, photography exhibitions, environmental awareness and
cultural dialogue beyond conventional institutional spaces into villages,
schools, roadsides and public environments. His wider practice includes
environmental research, public art, cultural documentation, design and
community-based artistic practice.
His work has been exhibited
nationally and internationally and has been featured by BBC Urdu, Voice of
America, Dawn, The News, Geo News, Pakistan Television, Samaa TV and Express
Tribune. His recognitions include the UAE Golden Residency Visa for Culture and
the Arts (2024) and the Niggah Award for Creative Photography (2026).
He studied Fine Arts and Geography
at Government College University (GCU), Lahore, completing his Intermediate in
1999, and later graduated in Fine Arts Foundation and Design from the National
College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, in 2004.
Across his photographic, public
and interdisciplinary practice, Chaudhry remains interested in how ordinary
places can reveal unexpected relationships between memory, ecology, culture and
imagination. For him, image-making is ultimately a way of paying attention: a
means of remaining curious about the world and translating that curiosity into
forms that can be experienced, remembered and shared.
