Whenever I see this plant, it speaks volumes in its silence, waving at me in a gentle, harmonious way. Suddenly, I recognize it as a friend from my childhood walks and cycling adventures in the outskirts of my ancient town, Ajudhan, now called Pakpattan in Punjab, Pakistan.
Throughout the UAE, particularly in Dubai, wild grass plays a significant role as a decorative element in urban landscapes. These grasses are carefully maintained and integrated into parks, along footpaths, roadsides, and at corners, creating a harmonious and visually appealing ambiance. Their presence not only adds beauty but also demonstrates a thoughtful approach to sustainable urban planning.
In the Indian subcontinent, these straw-like grasses have a long history of practical use. For centuries, they have been fashioned into brooms for basic household cleaning. From rural villages to bustling city homes, traditional van and bambar brooms made from these grasses remain indispensable tools.
Since the UAE's establishment, the drive to promote greenery in a region known for its arid climate has been a priority. Ecologists introduced these grasses as a smart and sustainable solution. Their resilience and ability to thrive in challenging conditions have ensured lush green patches that seamlessly blend with the landscapes. These grasses not only contribute to ecological sustainability but also provide a lasting green aesthetic that continues to embrace the UAE’s cityscapes.
